The Working Group, Survivorship Care and Nutritional Support, endeavours to promote clinical and epidemiological research together with dedicated care pathways within the medical care for recovered, chronic, and long-term cancer patients; furthermore, we believe nutritional support must be part of cancer treatment to enhance patient quality of life and overall treatment effectiveness.
In oncology facilities, the problems related to both the acute treatment phase and the disease’s chronic stage are well known and addressed, although unfortunately often still incomplete. However, less is known about or done to meet the requirements of former patients who are no longer in regular contact with hospital specialists because they (are cleared of disease or) have potentially recovered. Nevertheless, they require an optimal multidisciplinary approach to meet their health needs and safeguard their quality of life. Over the years, the emergence of this new demand is arousing a renewed interest in identifying care models that guarantee the quality of the services offered and, at the same time, allow for the sustainability and equity of the system.
Two synergistic technical Tables dedicated to Survivorship Care and Nutritional Support, consisting of experts from 23 IRCCS as well as the Higher Institute of Health, AIMAC and AIOM, aim to:
- develop research in the field of Survivorship Care and Clinical Nutrition in oncology with particular reference to the Mission on Cancer
- broaden awareness of the fundamental importance of Survivorship Care and Nutritional Support, particularly in the institutional area regarding the requirements of the European Cancer Plan, to ensure the implementation of dedicated care paths
- foster the development of clinical and research collaborative networks
- work alongside Patient Associations to support and empower patients to ensure that all patients in every region have the right to receive adequate quality care
